Griot Session: Aja Monet
The Chewstick Foundation will be conducting its transformative and empowering Retreat series this year, with the first to kick off with the Summer Retreat from Friday, June 28th to Sunday, June 30th on Port’s Island with guest facilitator Ms. Aja Monet. Ms. Monet will not only share a presentation on the Paget Island Retreat alongside fellow participants, but will also take part in a poetry performance on Thursday, June 27th, and lead a workshop upon her return to the mainland on Sunday, June 30th at 6pm; both the performance and workshop will take place at The Chewstick Lounge. Ms. Monet is a poet, who is known for her vibrant and strong stage presence and is well respected within the global community of poets.
The events featuring Ms. Monet will begin Thursday, June 27th, where she will perform alongside local poets Ron Lightbourne and Yesha Townsend.
Thursday evening’s show will start at 8pm, entry is $15. This is a night that is not to be missed as it will be filled with a velvety smooth delivery of conscious poetry of the highest calibre that is guaranteed to soother the senses. Ms. Monet is a prolific poet, who for six years, has served as a youth mentor, poetry mentor, and poetry slam coach (2009) for Urban Word NYC, working with at-risk youth in inner-city New York and has for three years worked with Odyssey House as poetry/performance program coordinator, teacher, and mentor. Additionally, using poetry as a therapeutic art form, she teaches summers at Omega Institute, a center for holistic studies in Rhinebeck, NY. She’s a board member of Poetic Justice non profit at Lawrence Road Middle School in Uniondale, NY.
